Abdul Rahims to resume business in the East

With new vistas being opened in the Eastern province, Abdul Rahims and Brothers plans to expand their volume of business in those areas shortly as in the past.

Chairman Abdul Rahims and Brothers Ruzly Hussain told a media conference that 60 per cent of their merchandise were sold in the North and in the Eastern provinces prior to 1983. But following the disturbances in 1983 sales dropped and affected the business adversely.

Abdul Rahims and Brothers (Wellawatte branch) is celebrating its 50th anniversary from November 27 to December 7, and offers special discounts and gift vouchers and gifts to customers at their shop.

Chairman Hussain said they have adopted the shop within a shop concept to sell their merchandise.

"We find it most convenient to present ourselves through big partner outlets such as the Singer Company. We sell Singer products in our shops and they have allowed us to have a showroom in their Mega outlets."

"The Singer Mega shops are at Duplication Road, Wattala, Negombo, Nugegoda and Rajgiriya. We hope to have a showroom at the Singer Mega shop at Kiribathgoda, Kurunegala and probably in the Eastern province."

He said although the company diversified its business over the years the core business remained in household items. A customer presenting a receipt over 25 years or more will be entitled to a gift voucher worth Rs. 5,000 at the Wellawatte shop.

Those who purchase goods to the value of Rs. 5,000 will also be entitled to a gift. Selected items will carry a discount of 50 per cent. Customers who call at the shop will be given an attractive calender.

Abdul Rahims company was founded in 1872, in Galle by I. L. M. Mohamed Cassim in the name of his elder son, M. C. Abdul Rahim and his three brothers.

Following the demise of Abdul Rahim his three brothers expanded the business enterprise by opening a second store in Pettah in 1920. Later two more branches were opened in Kandy and Wellawatte.

The branch at Wellawatte which was opened in 1958 celebrated its 50th year last week.

A company that had existed for more than a century, is well renowned for its cutlery, kitchenware and other household items.

The company supplies items to local and foreign hotels, the Armed Forces and airlines.
