Fancied teams enter Cup C’ship quarter-finals

Some of the fancied teams for the plum of Rugby Sevens in the corporate sector such as Seylan Bank, Sampath Bank, HNB, Asia Capital and Ceylinco ‘A’ all qualified to be featured in the Cup Championship quarter-finals of the 38th Mercantile Rugby Sevens continued on day two at Longden Place yesterday.

The losers of the Cup quarters will contest in the `Plate’ category while the quarter-finalists for the segments of `Bowl’ and `Shield’ were also found after yesterday’s line-up of matches.

Among the teams to excel on day two were Asia Capital who crushed Amana Takaful 50-0, Powerscan who hammered NDB Bank Black 54-0, and Hirdaramanis who dumped Virtusa also by the identical scoreline. Among other teams to have topped the 30 point margin were Janashakthi who beat HSBC `B’ 31-0, Commercial Bank who saw off HNB 35-5 and Suntel who got the better of Union Bank 31-14. While the day was littered with one-sided games with the odd close game being thrown in for good measure there was also a drawn tie when Lanka Bell and Powerscan were featured in a 12-all draw.

A galaxy of Sri Lanka stars were seen in action yesterday at the Mercantile Rugby Sevens with some of the players to hog the spotlight being Sanjeewa Jayasinghe and Sumedha Jayasinghe from Hatton National Bank, Fazil Marija, Saliya Kumara, Pradeep Liyanage and Mohammed Sheriff from Emjay International, Buddhika Thalagampola and Kishore Jehan turning out for Union Bank while Radhika Hettiarachchi, Nillufer Ibrahim and Dhanushka Pushpakumara represented Asia Capital.

The Cup quarter-final line-up - Seylan Bank vs Sampath Bank, Emjay International vs HNB, Asia Capital vs Commercial Bank, Ceylinco ‘A’ vs John Keells `A’.

Bowl quarter-final - Sri Lanka Insurance vs Union Bank, Suntel vs Ceylinco `B’, Dialog `A’ vs Lanka Bell, Powerscan vs Dissanayake Enterprises.

Shield quarter-final - Janashakthi vs E-Wise, Lanka Hospitals vs Dialog `B’, Hirdaramanis `B’ vs Standard Bank, Metropolitan Group vs Softlogic.
