The Ministry of Healthcare and Nutrition will provide healthcare
facilities to civilians coming from LTTE controlled areas.
A large influx of civilians to government administered areas seeking
protection, had been reported in the past few days.
"Fourteen IDP camps have been set up in the Vavuniya district. Most
of the injured civilians are brought to the Trincomalee hospital which
lacks sufficient facilities. So we transferred some of them to Vavuniya,
Mannar and Kanthale hospitals" said Healthcare and Nutrition Minister,
Nimal Siripala de Silva.
He also said that in addition to the permanent staff they have
already sent 120 Nurses, 37 Medical Officers, five consultants and para
medical officers to Vavuniya, Chettikulam, Trincomalee, Mannar, Kanthale
and Mullaitivu hospitals. They had also sent a midwife and a PHI to
every IDP camp.
According to Health Ministry data 750 pregnant mothers are in 14 IDP
camps. "We send them to Vavuniya and Chettikulam hospitals for the
delivery and after the delivery we transferred them to the Vavuniya
Ayurvedic hospital due to the lack of facilities for new born babies in
camps. We have sent VOGs and nurses to Vavuniya and Chettikulam
hospitals," said the Minister.
