Facelift to Colombo, Kamil assures

Colombo Municipal Council in collaboration with private sector
organisations in the city will launch a special 100-day Keep the City
Clean Development Program. Colombo Municipal Council's Chief city
administrator Omar Kamil told the Sunday Observer .
President Mahinda Rajapaksa appointed me as the Chief City
Administrator and therefore it is my prime responsibility to serve the
Colombo residents fully.
My priorities are solid waste management,
osquito eradication, development of roads etc, the Chief
Administrator said.
Steps will also be taken to get the private sector organisations to
beautify the city roundabouts, pavements.
Easing traffic congestion is long overdue and a joint program with
the police would be introduced, he added.
The cleaning process in the city started at Malwaththa Road, Pettah
on July 1 will continue for 100 days, he said.
Bellanwila Esala festival ends next Sunday

The grand finale of the 16-day annual Bellanwila Esala religious
festival and Perahera that started last Sunday (August 2) will end next
Sunday (August 16)) with alms-giving to the Gods while the three day Mal
processions will begin tomorrow. The week-long Paritta chanting that
started with the commencement of the festival ended yesterday with the
holding of the 'Dorakadaasna'.
The annual festival which started over 59 years ago by late Ven.
Bellanwila Somaratana Nayake Thera has continued uninterrupted,
organisers of the festival said. The current ambience of peace and
harmony prevailing in the country will certainly provide the opportunity
for larger crowds of devotees to participate and obtain blessings of the
Triple Gem and also acquire mart, the sources stated.
New pasteurizer at Nikaweratiya
Minister of Livestock Development, C.B. Ratnayake has inaugurated a
new pasteurizer to prepare pasteurized milk, at Nikaweratiya Farm
belonging to National Livestock Development Board.
Thereby, fresh milk taken from healthy cows will be sent for
pasteurization as quickly as possible. This pasteurized milk is prepared
without adding any chemical preservatives.
Deputy Chairman of National Livestock Development Board, Roshan
Gunawardena said people will have the access to consume nutritious fresh
milk and anticipate to produce thousand packets of chocolate and vanilla
flavoured milk daily.

Book launch today
Journalist M. M. M. Noorul Haq's Imaniya Peroligal, book launching
ceremony will hold today, August 9 at 3.30 p.m. at the Public Library
auditorium, Colombo 7.
Deputy Public Estate Management and Development Minister S.
Nijamudeen and Deputy Livestock Development Minister K. A. Baiz will be
the chief guests.

Praise and worship service
A special service of 'Praise and Worship' will be held on August 9,
2009 (tomorrow) at 10.30 a.m. at the Cathedral of Christ the Living
Saviour, Bauddhaloka Mawatha (adjoining the BMICH) Colombo 7.
This service, which is open to all, is designed to inspire
spirituality and a personal experience of the love of God. The Speaker
and Minister at this service, conducted under the umbrella of the
ministry of 'Peace for All', will be Dr. Vijaya Corea.
Death of retired Lake House employee
The death occurred yesterday of L.B. Sirisena Hewagama (89), who was
Chief Proof Reader at Lake House at the time of his retirement 30 years
ago.
His remains lie at his School Lane residence in Gangodawila and the
funeral will take place at 5 p.m. today at the Udahamulla cemetery. |
