The 46th annual Colombo Camporee organised by the Colombo
District Scout Branch Association of the Sri Lanka Scout
Association was opened by the First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa
at the Viharamahadevi Park, Colombo on Friday. Here the
First Lady is being conducted to the Camporee site by the
Colombo District Commissioner, Janaprith Fernando and the
Camporee Organising Commissioner, Assistant District
Commissioner, Wathsala Wijewickrema and other officials.
“Living in Harmony” is the theme of the Camporee with
islandwide participation of over 5,000 scouts, cubs and girl
guides, which will conclude on Tuesday, August 18.

Maha Saman Devalaya Esala Perahera

The Ratnapura Maha Saman Devalaya Esala Perahera will commence on
August 21 and the final night Perahera will be on September 4 and the
water cutting ceremony will be held at Ratmalella, Kaluganga on
September 5.
The Kumbal Perahera will be held from 21 to 25, the Devale Perahera
will be held from 26 to 30 and the Maha Perahera will be held from 31 to
September 4.
The Basnayake Nilame Sabaragamuwa Maha Saman Devalaya, Sunil
Weerasekera has already given instruction to officials to provide all
facilities to devotees during the Esala Perahera season.
Book launch of “Amawathura Vimarshanaya”
“Amawathura Vimarshanaya”, a book authored by Dr. D.V.F. Wijayaratne,
will be launched tomorrow, August 17 at 3.00 p.m., in the Ananda
Samarakoon Studio of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation.
The book launching ceremony will be presided over by Dr.
Harishchandra Wijetunge, whilst the key note address will be delivered
by Prof. Kusuma Karunaratne. Prof. Ananda Abeysiriwardene and Chairman,
Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation Hudson Samarasinghe will also address
the gathering.
“Amawathura Vimarshanaya” is a publication of S. Godage & Bros. and
Deshabandu Sirisumana Godage will ceremonially present a few books to
special invitees.
Tenth year commemoration
The tenth year commemoration of late Capt. Premil Perera of Commando
Regiment will be held on Sunday, August 23 at Wattala Town Hall,
organised by the Committee of Premil Perera Foundation.
Capt. Perera died in action while on a special operation on 22nd
August, 1999.
Distribution of free spectacles, special packs of school books and
equipment for school children of low income families, wheel chairs for
selected disabled people will be done, by the Foundation.
O+ve kidneys needed
A father of two, Hiripitiyage Wijesoma (58) of Thawalgoda, Kosgama,
is being treated for kidney failure. Consultant Nephrologist, Dr.
Rushika Lanerolle of Nawaloka Hospital has advised immediate transplant
for which a O+ve kidney is needed.
Wijesoma appeals to the public for a kidney donation or financial

P. D. H. Rajapakshe, an old boy of Dharmaraja college currently
serving the Kegalle Police Division as an Assistant Superintendent of
Police is suffering from a severe kidney ailment.
Dr. A. W. M. Wazil of the Nephrology Unit of the Kandy General

‘Sankranthiye Nimeshayak’ to go on the boards
‘Sankranthiye Nimeshayak’, a new drama created by up and coming
artist Namal Weerabahu will be staged on August 22 at 6 p.m. at the Open
Air Theatre of the Wayamba Jana Kala Centre. Chief Minister of
Northwestern Province Athula Wijesinghe will be the chief guest.
The drama with a novel concept of amalgamating stage acting and
cinematic concepts, is a story of a two Sinhala and Tamil young men,
entangled in the 30 years of ethnic war. The cast include Rohith Mannage,
Berty Nihal Susiripala, Namal Weerabahu, Anoja Chathurangani and several
other veteran and amateur artists.
Sir Razik commemoration postponed
The 25th death anniversary commemoration of Marhoom Al Haj Sir Razik
Fareed organised by the Sir Razik Fareed Foundation with the
co-operation of the Moors’ Islamic Cultural Home (Inc.) which falls this
year on Sunday August 23, has been put off on a decision taken by the
Foundation Board of Directors due to the intervening Ramazan Fast. – RF
Socialist Alliance public meeting
A public meeting of the Socialist Alliance will be held on Monday,
August 17 at 4.00 p.m. at the Auditorium of the Mahaweli Centre, Colombo
7 to commemorate the Great Hartal of 1953, the Media Co-ordinator of the
Alliance, L.R. Stephen announced.
The following are scheduled to address the meeting: D.E.W. Gunasekera,
Constitutional Affairs and National Integration Minister and General
Secretary of the Communist Party of Sri Lanka, Tissa Vitharana, Science
and Technology Minister and leader of the Lanka Sama Samaja Party and
Vasudeva Nanayakkara, leader of the Democratic Left Front.
The meeting will be presided over by General Secretary of the Lanka
Sama Samaja Party, Wimalasiri de Mel.
