Orchid Circle annual show
The Orchid circle of Ceylon celebrated its (75th) anniversary with an
exhibition of orchids and an ornamental plant sale was held at the
Viharamahadevi Park on August 27th 28th and 29th. Dr. Soma Edirisinghe
was the chief guest.
The main object of this show was to encourage the young orchid lovers
to grow orchids successfully and to participate in all orchid related
activities by joining the Orchid Circle, the organiser said.
The orchid has a prestigious name worldwide and is grown in its many
shapes and forms in every part of the world. Asian orchids have captured
the world market with Thailand in the forefront of the world's
producers.
They said the orchid circle has the distinction of being the first
such society in Asia and the second oldest in the world. It was founded
in 1934 under the distinguished presidency of D.S. Senanayake.
The annual show at Viharamanadevi Park provided its members an
opportunity to exhibit their most exotic blooms and complete for a
variety of prestigious awards among which was the D.S. Senanayake cup
for the Best Orchid on show. It also provided an opportunity to view
some beautifully landscaped groups of orchids in colourful array and to
learn about growing orchids at the lectures held daily during the show.
