Amith Weerasinghe wins a hard fought battle

The Men’s Open Singles event saw a cliff hanger saw Amith Weerasinghe being stretched all the way by Chinthaka Shaveen at the 94th Nationals conducted by the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) at Greenpath courts winning 7-5, 6-4, 6-4. He had to summon all his reserves to overcome Chinthaka’s challenge.

Meanwhile, the experienced Rajeewa Rajapakse swept to an easy 6-0, 6-0, 6-1 win over Madusha Weerasuriya while Sanka Athukorala, the cricketer turned tennis player beat M.A. Shakir in a three setter 6-3, 6-3, 6-3. The other matches were relatively easy rounding ups for Michael Siyaguna who beat T. Krishanthan 6-0, 6-1, 6-3, Shamal Dissanayake who outclassed Mozon Christopher 6-1, 6-2, 6-1, Thurunu Ishwarage overcoming Prathap Haputhanthri 6-4, 6-0, 6-4. The 16-day championship will be continued this morning.

Thurunu Ishwarage beat Prathap Haputhanthri 6/4, 6/0, 6/4.

Michael Siyaguna beat T. Krishanthan 6/0, 6/1, 6/3.

Shamal Disanayake beat Mozon Christopher 6/1, 6/2, 6/1.

Amith Weerasinghe beat Chinthaka Shaveen 7/5, 6/4, 6/4.

Sanka Athukorala beat M.A. Shakir 6/3, 6/3, 6/3.
