Saunders take Gold Cup

A goal in each half saw Saunders SC lift the Gold Cup defeating the holders and recent winners of Holcim FA Cup, Ratnam SC by 2 goals to nil in the final played at the City Football League grounds yesterday. The tournament was conducted by the Colombo Football League and sponsored by Harcourts (Pvt) Ltd.

The game was played at a frantic pace, although there were few scoring chances there was no lack of excitement.

Success came in the Saunders SC way in the 36th minute. Collecting a knock down on the left angle from B. G. A. Dilan, striker Tharanga Kumara controlled the ball turned smacked into the left corner of the net.

Saunders led 1-nil at half time.

Ratnam did not play their usual style of play. Their strikers were to be blamed for poor finishes. On the other hand Saunders SC played a well controlled game. Tharanga Kumara scored his second goal to enable his side achieve a well deserved victory over the defending champions.

Java Lane win Silver Cup

Java Lane SC won the Silver Cup defeating Sarasavi SC 3-0 in the final prior to the Gold Cup final.

M. K. M. Alam scored two goals in the first half in the 17th and 26th minutes. M. N. M. Nauna added the 3rd goal in the second half to give Java Lane SC a convincing victory.
