George Keyt

A tribute on his 90th birthday
In the wake of impressionism and
so cubism
Matisse, Rembrandt, Renoir
and Picasso
Sunk deep are his roots
in the native soil.
Scribbling on the wall, as
a child, his reflections on
men and women, emerged
as faces poignant, bright and sensuous;
figures enwrapt with
intense passion, bound in tapestries
of colour,
recalling our 'mute inglorious' past
Growing up, steeped in the tradition
of the Orient, his work adorned the
Venice Biennale, London, Paris and New York.
Immersed in the philosophy of
the Upanishads, the Panchatantra
the Bhaghavat Geeta, his figures
grew to evolve a style
so indigenous, spanning nine decades,
he gleams still as a beacon its lustre
pervading, our realm -

On our journey of life...

We live because we are born.
We attribute our destiny to Karma
We cannot explore but believe
The enlightened teachers proclaimed
Of the two ends the "birth and the death."

Three families of one single unit
In three different continents poles apart
and scattered we live with no damage to love
amidst all the busy and rush life
the bond of love will remain everlasting.

We say it is ours with no base to claim
We call you "our son" she "my husband."
Your son cries aloud for his loving dad
Know that we are attached but detached
and time ripens in every moment and wink,
Pushing us to the gates of "exit" and depart.

Do nothing to others that hurt yourself.
Find time for the smile of your child.
To look at the eyes of the wife you love
To praise the clouds and the beautiful sky
To look at the petals of a smiling flower.

Find a moment to sit closing the eyes
Hear the inner voice and see better for a second
Thank those who toiled for your success
Respect every being to the best of our ability,
Be content with what you do and possess.

If rebirth is true and if I have to come back,
I like to have you three in the nest I make.
To see you two with the queen of my life
To go through the same bliss I cherish today.
May this be considered as your birthday prayer!

Nimal Sadera, Thathi,Brisbane.

The Fate

Sucking the essence of
Our nation's identity,
Weakening the strength of
Our heart and soul,
Paralysing the backbone of
This Isle's economy,
Exploding the land, air,
Water and everything,
Massacring valued democracy,
And enjoying the flesh and blood
Of infants, young, clergy and old,
They tried to crown
Their Dream World
Yet...
The crown turning into a boomerang
Helped them conquer
Even less than six feet
In Nowhere Kingdom!

Grandchildren

Like the petals of roses, that fell from heaven,
You entered our life one by one.
Spreading fragrance and joy in our home,
While in gladness, we watched spellbound.

No words can express the happiness you bring,
To us, the PARENTS whom you made GRAND.
Our doors are open both day and night,
For you to make, our lives shine bright.

Coloured balls and toy cars, broken and in pieces
Spiderman sits tired in a corner,
While batman waits as if to take flight,
Poor teddy bear yearning to get hugged,
Lie sad and neglected on the ground
No wonder "Barbie" seems so proud,
She's petted and fussed the whole day around.

You erase the boredom out of our life,
Rejuvenating it, by adding fun and spice.
Childhood laughter once your parents emanated,
Brought back to life by their own flesh and blood.
No matter how big or strong you grow,
Remember us with love, when we are "NO MORE."
That's all we ask for dear "D", "A" and "O"!
May the Devas, protect you for evermore.

A bouquet to Principals

"Puttana Vattu Manussanan"
(treasures of humans are children)
Second motherhood is assuming the principalship
being a mother to thousands of tender rose buds
Rich or poor! fair or dark!
Playful or sick! mischievous or obedient!
Rarely is cane raised
With intention of moulding their future
Different flowers blossom
In a fertile rainforest
Schools are evergreen rain-forests,
Full of diversified colours and aromas
Spread by the floral buds - the children
School is the main socialization agent
"Presenting a noble tomorrow" is their motto!
External world assess a child
Only by the final exam results,
"Is it fair?" Mesdames argue!
They are realist sufficiently
To make the society know
School education is never limited to O/L and A/L
"The Hidden Curriculum," "The School Culture"
These definitions sail forward
Owing to their mental power
Dear Mesdames!
Humble request is this,
Mould the newcomers to the teaching profession
In order to brighten
The future of whole Sri Lanka!
Equip youth with knowledge and skills
With your kind farsighted
Broad minded vision and mission!
Dedicated to Principal
Mrs. L. M. Rupa S. Jayasinghe of B.G.C.
