To my unborn child

I remember the day
I felt you really
For the first time
I felt your tender touch
Like pulse going up and down
My heart jumped in joy
From then, I knew you were there
You were there with me
To console me
To love me really
I see the days
We will both go together
Hand in hand
The days you sleep on my lap
Innocently
You have changed my life
I learn to be patient
I try to be religious
I practise conquering anger
It's you who taught me
To be new
Once the barren land
Is fertile today
You're there to bloom
Spreading petals one by one
We're waiting for you my dear
Waiting to welcome you

That's how to be a winner

To be the best that you can be
Have faith in your ability
Live joyfully and honestly
That's how to be a winner....

Take time to listen and share
Be patient, generous and fair
Treat others with respect and care
That's how to be a winner....

See beauty everywhere you go
Appreciate the strength you have
And seek out to learn and grow
That's how to be a winner... Expect good things to come into your life
Believe there is nothing you can't do
Make everyday count your whole life
That's how to be a winner....

To my dearest daughter

Who snatched
The rosy cheeks,
Bright eyes,
Cute face of my daughter?

Becoming clever
To your teachers
An obedient daughter
To your parents
An honest one
Among your friends

At night
I enter the vacated room
And touch the frock
You wore the last day
To feel the softness
Of your skin

Surely I know that
You'll never come alone
Just as the daughter
Who left me unkindly
But as the mother
Of a tiny baby
Who knows nothing

Indika Vithanage

Did you see the war?

One morn I met her in a Northern shore
A dirty white and brown frock she wore
She waved her hand and gave me a smile
A smile I have never experienced before

When I gifted her a nice doll to play
Her dancing eyes had many a word to say
No doubt the doll was luckier than she
For it was kissed and loved all day

The wretched sun went up and down
She wasn't seen in the shore or in town
Whenever I questioned her father about her
He spoke no words, but gave a chilly frown

Colombo was shaken by another bomb
My destiny led me to the bloody storm
Oh! God after eleven long years I found
My lovely dark doll's broken burning parts

The Southern Hero

He was a hero born on Southern coast
And re-wrote a history for us to boast
Religion and motherland was his utmost
Patience and faith is his art
Brave is he! Yet kind at heart
Once a father then a leader to all
You are the spirited soul of our land
And a legend for the generations to come
May this be a tribute to our hero
We all Southerners bow our heads and say Bravo!!!

- Tiny Sahabandu
