The handing over of documents detailing the allocation of tasks and responsibilities in the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) campaign for the Southern Provincial Council election to relevant sectoral leaders, took place at the Tangalle Town Hall recently. Here Ports, Aviation and Water Management Minister and District campaign leader, Chamal Rajapaksa hands over documents to a member. Prof. G.L. Peiris, Export Development and International Trade Minister and acting Minister of Posts and Telecommunication who is also in charge of the election campaign, Mahinda Amaraweera, Minister of Water Supply and Mahipala Herath, Chief Minister of Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, Minister of Mass Media and Investment Promotion and C.B. Ratnayake, Minister of Livestock were also present.


 
The book titled ‘Viparama’ written by Dinamina Chief Editor Mahinda Abeysundara, was released at a ceremony held at the Mahaweli Centre, Colombo last Wednesday. Ramazan festival on ITN tomorrow

The Ramazan festival program will be telecast on Sept. 21 at 11.30 a.m. over ITN.A discussion on Eid-ul-Fitr will be presented by Javid Munawaar, featured with President, Sri Lanka Islamic Society Mohamed Ruzaik Farook and Deputy Principal, Colombo Ahadiyya School Mohamed Fawazir.

There will also be a presentation of Islamic songs by Esaiko, Dr. N. M. Noordeen and Roshan Fahmy. Kalaiwathy Kaleel's poem also will be telecast.Siddeek Haniffa is the program producer. (R.F.)



AGM of SLHA on Sept. 26

The 51st Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka Housewives' Association (SLHA) will be held on Saturday, Sept 26 at the Grand Oriental Hotel (GOH) Lotus Room, Colombo 1 from 9.00 a.m. onwards.


Parakum Educational Exhibition

Parakrama Maha Vidyalaya, Bandarawatta, Gampaha will hold Parakum Educational Exhibition from Wednesday, Sept. 23 to Sunday, Sept. 27 from 9.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m.


Vidhianandan of YMCA- Draughts champ

The All-Island Draughts Championship conducted by the Colombo YMCA was successfully concluded. The preliminary stage of the championship was conducted on a knock-out basis. Thereafter the quarter-finalists played each other on a league basis.

V. Vidhianandan of the Colombo Y.M.C.A. was undefeated throughout the championship and emerged a clear winner. Ramya Gunasekara was the 1st Runner-up and Krishantha Kumarage was the 2nd Runner-up. 44 Players from all parts of the Island competed in the tournament.

Navarathri celebrations

To mark the Navarathri Festival, 'Saraswathi Pooja' will be held in Parliament on September 25, at 1.30 p.m.

The Ministry of Religious and Cultural Affairs and the Department of Hindu Religious and Cultural Affairs have jointly organised the event which will include cultural programs.

Meanwhile, a special Sri Lakshmi Pooja ceremony will be held as part of the Navarathri Festival at the official residence of the Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara on September 23, at 6.30 p.m.


Rajani Thiranagama memorial lecture

The twentieth death anniversary of Dr. Rajani Thiranagama, human rights activist and head of the Department of Anatomy, University of Jaffna at the time of her assassination, will be celebrated on September 25 at the BMICH Committee Room 'A' at 6.00 p.m. Thirnagama was a founder member of the University Teachers for Human Rights, Jaffna.

The Rajani Thiranagama memorial lecture will be delivered by Nandita Haksar, India's prominent human rights activist and Supreme Court lawyer. The title of her lecture is 'Resistance and the Politics of Fear'. For the past 25 years, Haksar has worked as a human rights lawyer, campaigner and writer. She has set many precedents in human rights and refugees law. She has taken up cases in India's courts as well as appearing before international courts and committees. Haksar has evolved and taught courses on human rights in various universities.

The lecture is organised by the International Centre for Ethnic Studies and the Rajani Thiranagama Memorial Committee, with support from the Australian High Commission, Colombo.


Hubert Perera dies

D. C. Hubert Perera, retired Assistant Secretary, Ministry of Defence (79) expired yesterday, after a brief illness.

An All Island Justice of Peace and a social worker in Ratmalana, he was the husband of Mrs. Mallika Perera, Registrar of Marriages.

His remains lie at No. 193, Galle Road, Ratmalana and the cortege will leave residence tomorrow (Monday) at 4.00 p.m. for cremation at Mount Lavinia cemetery.


Anulians medi clinic on Sept. 25

The annual medical clinic organised by the Nugegoda Anula Vidyalaya Old Girls Association’s Medical and Nutrition sub-committee, for the benefit of its staff including past members, will be held on Friday Sept. 25 at the school auditorium.

All members of the staff and past pupils including doctors are welcome.
