Georgian Mikheil wins Ravana Chess title

CHESS: The Grand Master from Georgia Mchedlishvili Mikheil won the
title with better tie break score at the Ravana Challenge International
Chess Tournament 2009 organised by Blue and Gold Chess Club held at the
Ceylon Intercontinental Hotel yesterday. The championships was sponsored
by Tigo.
Fifty-one chess players participated at the seven day international
tournament with 30 foreign players in the fray. Mikheil and George
Vladimir from Mazedonia who collected seven and half points each at the
end of the championship games drew the final game, but on the better tie
score 65 1/2 saw Georgian Grand Master annex the title.
Favourite and four times United States champions Shabalov Alexander
was placed third with 7 points. Mchedlishvili Mikheil received three
thousand US dollars. Sri Lanka fielded twenty four competitors with
H.L.M. Hapuaarachchi and C.K.D. Fonseka being placed in 20th and 21st
positions. Both had 6 points each, but Hapuaarachchi had a good tie
score of 46 1/2 to Fonseka's 45 1/2.
The first ten positions of the Ravana Challenge International Chess
Tournament Grand Masters Mikheil (Georgia), Vladimir (Mazedonia),
Alexander (USA), Moradiabadi Elshan (Iran), Filippov Anton (Uzbakistan),
Gagunashvili Merab (Georgia) Malakhatko Vladim (Belgium), Murshed Niaz
(Bangladesh), Ismagambetov Anuar (Khasakstan) and Kotanjian Tigran
(Armenia).
