Ajith Bandara wins third stage Nestomalt Mini Marathon

A.M. Ajith Bandara of the SL Army (50.35.08 sec) and R.A. Manjula Dilhani (01.05.02) clinched the men's and women's titles respectively in the Nestomalt Mini-Marathon third stage held yesterday in Kurunegala.

Over 600 participants for the Open and the school categories participated.

Meanwhile M. Gayan Asanka of J.R. Jayewardene MMV (34.38.08 secs) and P.M. Sureka Sevuwandi of Sri Saranankara MV (41.15.01 secs) won the schools category which was worked off over a distance of ten kilometres.

The marathons were conducted by the Athletic Association of Sri Lanka with the support of Sri Lanka Police and the Education Ministry. The Nestle Lanka Pvt Ltd sponsored these marathons.

Senior DIG North Central Jayantha Gamage, Major General Palitha Fernando, DIG Wayamba Province Shantha Rajapaksa, SSP Kurunegala Cyril Fernando and Kurunegala SP Gunathilake were the guests of honour.

The first three placed runners in the Open Marathon were offered cash prizes of Rs. 10,000, Rs. 7,500 and Rs. 5,000 respectively in addition to trophies, medals and certificates. The first ten competitors who finished the marathon were presented with Nestomalt gift packs and certificates. The schools category winners were awarded Rs. 5,000, Rs. 3,000 and Rs. 2,000.

Meanwhile the fourth stage of the Nestomalt Mini-Marathon will be held on September 26 in Galle.

Schools (Boys): 1. M. Gayan Asanka (J.R. Jayewardena MMV) 34.38.08 sec, 2. H.A. Mohan Sanjaya Lankathillake (Sangabodhi Central College) 35.28.07 sec, 3. W.M. Dinesh Priyantha (Hunugalla Kavisena Herath M.V) 35.50.02 sec.

Schools (Girls):

1. P.M. Sureka Sevuwandi (Sri Saranankara MV) 41.15.01 sec, 2. H.M.K. Yashoda Herath (Mahasen Central National College) 42.08.01 sec, 3. R.M. Priyanka Dilhani (Minuwangate MV) 42.25.01 sec.

Open (Men):

1. A.M. Ajith Bandara (SL Army) 50.35.08 sec, 2. Saman Kumara (SL Army) 50.36.01 sec, 3. Priyantha Bandara (SL Army) 52.54.01 sec.

Women:

1. R.A. Manjula Dilhani (Puttlam) 01.05.02 sec 2. K.G. Samanthi Chandrani (Police) 1.08.01 sec, 3. M.P.I. Dilrukshi (SL Army) 1.13.01 sec.
