 Boozing bear chills out
Shoppers in a Hayward, Wisconsin grocery store got an unexpected
surprise when a 125-pound black bear wandered inside and headed straight
for the beer cooler. The bear stopped Friday night at Marketplace Foods
in Hayward, about 140 miles northeast of Minneapolis, sauntering through
the automatic doors and heading straight for the liquor department.
It calmly climbed up 12 feet onto a shelf in the beer cooler where it
sat for about an hour while employees helped evacuate customers and
summoned wildlife officials. Officials from the Wisconsin Department of
Natural Resources tranquilized the animal and took it out of the store.
Store workers say the bear seemed content in the cooler and did not
consume any alcohol.

Maldives ministers dive into cabinet meeting
Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed plunged first into the Indian
Ocean followed by his ministers, all clad in scuba gear, for the
nationally televised meeting, in order to draw attention to global
warming. Mr Nasheed and his deputy, Mohamed Waheed, and a dozen
ministers sat behind tables arranged in a horseshoe at a depth of 6m
(20ft).
They approved a resolution urging global action to cut carbon
emissions. Tropical reef fish swam among the ministers and the nation’s
red and green flag with white crescent moon was planted in the sea bed
behind Mr Nasheed. After surfacing, he called for the UN’s climate
summit in Copenhagen in December to forge a deal to reduce carbon
emissions blamed for rising sea levels that experts say could swamp the
Maldives by the end of the century. “We should come out of Copenhagen
with a deal that will ensure that everyone will survive,” said the
42-year-old president as he bobbed up and down in the sea.

Is the 22-inch man really a man?
No one disputes that 22-inch-tall Khagendra Thapa Magar is short
enough to be the world’s shortest man. There’s only one problem, he may
not yet be a man.
Magar’s family held a big party in Katmandu, Nepal, on Thursday, to
celebrate what his family claimed to be his 18th birthday.
They announced to news organizations that they were sending an
application into Guinness World Records for Magar’s certification.
Khagendra Thapa Magar of Nepal is just 22 inches tall. He could be
declared the world’s shortest man, once Guinness World Records certifies
his age and height.
His family says he is 18. Guinness officials, however, say they
already have a document that states that Magar is 17. If so, that would
make him a year short of claiming the title. Guinness obtained Magar’s
birth registration certificate in 2006, after the Dwarf Association of
Nepal contacted officials claiming one of their members might qualify as
the shortest man in the world. At the time, Magar was just over 20
inches tall. Magar was born on Oct. 4, 1992.
