Japan grants US$ 24m for development

Japan provided US$24 million to Sri Lanka for development and
humanitarian projects under the Grant Assistance for grass roots level.
Human Security Projects (GGP), said the Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka
Kuino Takahashi.
Under the GGP program, Japan focuses on the projects on livelihood
improvement support for people of conflict affected areas, he said.
The project on Humanitarian demining for early resettlement of
internally displaced people and uplifting lives of people in rural areas
are the other project areas which Japan considers for financial
assistance, he said.
The latest Project which is being selected for funding under the GGP
scheme is the establishment of a new maternity and dental unit at
Dambana Hospital in Badulla district.
Rs. 9.2 million will be provided for this project, which will benefit
the people of the area including the indigenous Veddah community in
Dambana.
This project will be implemented by the Regional Director of Health
Services Badulla. The new maternity and dental units will receive the
latest equipment from Japan, the Ambassador assured.
The GGP projects scheme which was started in 1989 by the Japanese
government had financed 199 grass roots level human security projects in
Sri Lanka.
Japan funded 11, 13 and 6 grass roots level projects in 2007, 2008
and this year respectively. The Japanese grants were awarded to the HALO
Trust, Norwegian People's Aid, Danish Demining Group, Swiss Foundation
for Action Mines Advisory Group, Survivors Associated, People to People
Volunteers, National Water Supply and Drainage Board, Sewalanka
Foundation Lanka Jatika Sarvodaya Shramadana Sangamaya, Consortium of
Humanitarian Agencies, Women's Development Society, National Fisheries
Solidarity Movement, SAREERAM Sri Lanka National Foundation, Department
of Regional Director of Health Services Vavuniya, Arunodaya Rural
Development Federation Medirigiya, Lower Uva Development Centre and
Child Rehabilitation Centre, Ampara for the implementation of projects.
