National Safety Day

The Government has declared December 26 as the National Safety Day. The Ministry of Disaster Management and Human Rights has taken steps to celebrate National Safety Day on a grand scale, islandwide.

The objective of this declaration is to make the people pay serious attention to disasters by increasing their awareness about both natural and man-made disasters as well as to create an attitudinal change to mitigate, prevent and protect themselves especially in disaster's like the tsunami.

The Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights Mahinda Samarasinghe has instructed the Ministries of Education, Religious Affairs and Moral Upliftment. Public Administration and Home Affairs, Mass Media and Information, Defence, Public Security, Law and Order, Post and Telecommunication and Local Government and Provincial Councils to carry out the programme to mark National Safety Day, sources said.
