A meeting of the Galagedara SLFP organization was held at the Galagedara Cultural Centre recently. Here Galagedara Chief SLFP organizer and Minister of Public Administration and Home Affairs and Deputy Minister of Finance Dr. Sarath Amunugama presenting a copy of ‘Galagedara Navodaya’ to Minister Ferial Ashraff. Central Provincial Council member Dilum Amunugama was also present.



Sri Dheerananda MMV, Pilimatalawa, Kandy opened a computer centre recently in the school premises which was declared open by Governor of Central Province Tikiri Kobbekaduwa.

Birthday celebrations of Bhagawan Baba

Sri Sathya Sai Seva Samithi of No. 7, Namal Mawatha, Sririmal Uyana, Ratmalana will celebrate the 84th birthday celebrations of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba at the Centre with a special Bhajan program tomorrow, November 23 from 5 p.m. onwards.


AGM today

The 18th Annual General Meeting of the Old Anandians Centenary Group will be held today November 22 at the College Centenary Building auditorium at 10.00 am.

The Executive Committee for the year 2009/10 will be elected at the AGM.


Annual get-together

The annual get-together of the Old Anandians '93 Group will be held on Nov. 28 at the Ambalama Holiday Resort, Hanwella from 8.00 a.m onwards. All the members of the '93 group are cordially invited to attend this event.


Public lecture

The next lecture on the Gospel of St. Mark will be delivered by Rev. Fr. Nilendra Gunasekera, Professor in Sacred Scripture at the National Seminary Ampitiya, on Monday, November 23, at 5.30 p.m. in the Colombo YMCA Forum Hall.


Bad weather to continue

Heavy rainfall can be expected in the Western slopes and the Northern, Eastern, North Central and Southern Provinces in the coming days although the depression is moving towards the Arabian sea and away from Sri Lanka Meteorologist P.D. Ananda Perera told the Sunday Observer.

Heavy rains have lashed many parts of the country during the last few days after a turbulence condition developed above the Arabian sea and entered the Indian Ocean region. Now this low pressure condition has moved to the Arabian Sea, away from Sri Lanka.

The wet weather conditions would continue in the coming days. Heavy showers can be expected in the catchment areas.

According to Perera, thunder showers will develop at many places in the afternoon and night. There will be intermittent showers off the South Western coastal areas during morning hours.


Inter-school art competition

An inter-school art competition will be held to coincide with the 'Pahasarani' art exhibition and competition organised by the Colombo Devi Balika Vidyalaya Art Association .The competition is open to students in primary, junior, senior and senior secondary sections. Individual creations on chosen themes made out of water colours, pastel and collage should reach the organisers before January 20, 2010.


Widows to get handlooms

The Ministry of Textile Industries will launch a program to donate handloom equipment to women who are less than 35 years of age who had lost their husbands during the war to uplift their living standard, Ministry of Textile Industries sources said.

The Ministry would supply free raw materials for six months under the program which would cost Rs. 4 million.

Another program to train handloom workers is also under way and the trainees are entitled to a monthly allowance of Rs. 2000 within the program duration of six months.

The 75th Jubilee Celebration of Holy Family Convent, Dehiwela is scheduled to be held in June 2010. ANCL senior manager’s mother-in-law dies

The death occurred yesterday of Mrs. Chandralatha Samarasuriya, mother-in-law of Virajith Bois, Senior Manager (Credit Control) of Lake House.

She was the wife of Asoka Samarasuriya, retired Assistant Marketing Manager of the CWE.

The remains lie at her Parakrama Road residence in Gampaha and the cremation will take place at Kasagahawatte Cemetery, Gampaha on Monday (23) evening.
