CFHC to brand tuna
The Ceylon Fishery Harbours Corporation (CFHC), is taking steps to
brand the tuna that is exported from Sri Lanka in large volumes. By this
measure Sri Lanka will earn due recognition, and tuna exporters will be
in a better position to demand higher prices for their newly branded
product that is already well appreciated in some of the world's most
developed nations, such as Japan, the European Union and USA. In fact,
Sri Lanka is one of the largest exporters of tuna fish to Japan.
The waters around Sri Lanka are abound with tuna, of which the
internationally known Skipjack Tuna is the most common. The Yellow Fin
and Big Eye Tuna varieties which Sri Lanka is famous for are seen as two
of the premium tuna varieties which also fetch a high price in
international markets. Sri Lanka has been acknowledged as one of the
oldest and most important tuna producing nations in this part of the
world.
The favourable geographical location of the country, coupled with its
natural harbours and abundant marine life, renders Sri Lanka an ideal
location as a tuna exporting hub for the region. President Rajapaksa
notes in the Mahinda Chintana, "We have so far failed to tap the vast
potential of the ocean's resources. I am determined to change this
situation."
