225 obscene DVDs seized
by Jayampathy JAYASINGHE
The proliferation of obscene DVDs bring huge profits for vendors but
pose a serious problem for law enforcement authorities, police said.
A large haul of obscene DVDs was detected near the post office at
Union Place in Slave Island when a man tried to dispose 110 DVDs on
Friday to a decoy who posed off as a wholesale merchant police sources
told the `Sunday Observer.'
The man was arrested subsequently and more DVDs containing obscene
material were recovered from his flat at Baseline Road, Borella.
Two-hundred-and-twenty-five DVDs were seized. The suspect told police
that he ran a communication centre at Slave Island earlier and had
purchased the DVDs from a man at Moratuwa.
The DVDs were sold by vendors to schoolchildren and adults under
cover for prices ranging from Rs 80 - Rs. 100.
The detection was made by officers of the Central Anti Vice Striking
Force (CAVSF).
On an earlier occasion too, the CAVSF seized 390 pornographic Compact
Discs (CDs) following raids on Video parlours at Mount Lavinia, Moratuwa,
Piliyandala, Ruwanwella, Kesbewa and the Fort areas. Six suspects were
taken into custody following the detection.
Vendors enjoy a thriving business renting out these compact discs to
schoolchildren at Rs 50. |
