S.Thomas' beat Royal for seventh successive year in basketball

BASKETBALL: S. Thomas' College retained the D.S. Senanayake Memorial
Challenge Trophy for the seventh successive year, defeating Royal by 78
points to 58 in the annual Royal - Thomian Basketball Match played at
Mount Lavinia.
The Thomians struck form early with Vikesh Dharmasena and Sudarshana
Muttuthanthri combing well and feeding the 'scoring machine' Shaveen
Kapuwatta to pile on the score. S. Thomas also excelled in their zonal
defence and none of the Royal cagers could take shots from under the
basket. There was only Kasun Udayanga of Royal could score with long
range shots.
Playing at a good pace and banking on accurate passes S. Thomas'
raced to a 20-8 lead by the 15th minute and finished the first half at
33 points to 17.
The Thomians were faster on the ball and made flowing moves.
Utilising their height to advantage, S. Thomas' scored regularly.
Shaveen Kapuwatta and Sudarshana Muttuthanthri did most of the scoring
for Thomians in the second session of play. Top scores for Thomians S.
Kapuwatta (24), S. Muttuthanthri (16), V. Dharmasena (12). Kasun
Udayanga (14) and Elijah Synathamby (11) were the chief scorers for
Royal. S. Kapuwatta of S. Thomas' was adjudged the Most Valuable Player
and Shehan Gomez also of S. Thomas' was adjudged the best defensive
player for the second consecutive year. Kasun Udayanga of Royal was
named the best offensive player.
