Last Day to Catch:
‘Move Over Mrs Markham’
by Nilma Dole
What do you get when you cross a
Markham and a Marham? Trouble I guess..With play producer Jehan Bastians
sporting a shaven-head hairdo and the fact that he’s married to Mrs.
Markham Neidra Williams in real life makes this production all the more
to spare your quiet Sunday watching it rather than sitting like a couch
potato head flipping channels on the idiot box.
‘Move Over, Mrs. Markham is about this guy called Philip Markham, a
publisher of children’s books who is asked by his business partner,
Henry Lodge, if he can borrow his flat to gallivant with his latest
girlfriend.
Philip and his wife will be out for the evening and he reluctantly
agrees. At the same time, Joanna Markham is being persuaded by Linda
Lodge to let her borrow the empty flat to entertain her lover.
With some misgivings, Joanna agrees. What nobody knows is that the
interior designer who has been decorating the flat for the past three
months has decided that this is the night that he and Slyvie, the au
pair girl will try out the new oval bed.
When the Markhams’ evening out is cancelled, it is too late to let
any of the parties know and three sets of hopeful lovers converge on the
bedroom at the same time.
The situation is further complicated by the arrival of Olive Harriet
Smythe, a straight-laced authoress of children’s books. The frantic
efforts of the Markhams to hide the amorous goings-on and, at the same
time sign up Miss Smythe, lead the audience on a madcap romp of an
evening of laughter and merriment to follow.
If you’re interested in what happens next, make sure you see it today
at the Lionel Wendt because it sure will bring a smile on your face.
Speaking about the production, Jehan said “The play ‘Move over Mrs
Markham’ is a farcical comedy by Ray Cooney and John Chapman and the
cast includes Jerome De Silva, Neidra, and several new faces and of
course me - I am acting on this one!”
The cast will include Miranga Ariyaratne, Sulo Perera, Minosh
Joachim, Milinda Mendis, Roshni Gunaratne and Bimsara Premaratne. The
wittiness and nail-biting climax will keep you on the edge of your
seats.
So keep with the Christmas fun and spirit, as Jehan says that the
script itself is very funny and witty. Watch this rib tickler that
offers plenty of reason to laugh ‘Ho Ho Ho’ this season!
