Temple on a rock

Shylathalarama, the historical
temple situated about 3 kilometres off Alutgama along Colombo-Galle Main
Road, a religious place with pleasant environment. Inside the rocky long
chamber of the temple there is the longest reclining Buddha statue in
Sri Lanka which is 100 ft long.
Shylathalarama means the temple on a rocky plain. There is a small,
but very attractive immaculate white Dagoba, a gold plated standing
Buddha Statue on a large lotus flower sculptured from a rock, in the
middle of a pond and several oil lamps on the rocky plain.
Inside the viharage, there are some clever works of art that display
the ancient duel between King Dutugemanu and King Elara.
Though a considerable number of pilgrims and tourists visit this
historical place of warship daily, no proper maintenance work is done. |
