Five movies for 2010

The year 2009 is history, yet 2010’s reel scene is not entirely a mystery for movie buffs as some trailers have revealed what could be expected this year on the side of Sinhala cinema. Here is a peek at five movies which will begin screening at your local theatre in the New Year.

‘Suwanda Danuna Jeevithe’ Alunkulama’s latest production ‘Suwanda Danuna Jeevithe’ sees ‘Aasai Mang Piyabanna’ duo the bubbly Pooja Umashanker and Roshan Ranawana taking lead roles in a stirring love story scripted by Dhammika Siriwardena. The movie which marks Siriwardena’s entrance to the reel scene as a director also includes Sanath Gunathilake, Moraine Charuni, Ramani Siriwardhane, Himali Siriwardhane, Rex Koddippilie, Gayathri Dias, Pubudu Chathuranga and others in significant roles. It includes some light-hearted tunes and action which will keep the audience begging for more.

‘Mago Digo Dai’ Film importer and distributor Janitha Marasinghe’s debut movie production ‘Mago Digo Dai’ introduces Gamini Susiriwardena to cinema. Vijaya Nandasiri, Anarkalli Aakarsha, Sanath Gunathilaka, Ronnie Leitch, Anton Jude, Sunil Hettiarachchi, Wasala Senarath, Dilshani Perera, Sashiranga Wickremasekera, Tennyson Edirisinghe, Malan Karunaratne, Ramesh Uvais and Anura Bandara Rajaguru are also part of the cast. Directed by Lal Priyadeva, the comedy relates a story of a police intelligence unit in which main investigators are Sergeant C. K. Perera and PC I. O. Aari takes to investigating a daring case.

‘Uththara’ Assistant director and director Sandun Rajakaruna entered cinema as director with ‘Uththara’, a touching romance between Shanilka, an upcoming young musician and Uththara, the daughter of a minister. Hashini Gonagala enters movies in a leading role in the film opposite Suraj Mapa. The movie is said to include some exceptional dance moves. Sanath Gunatillake, Anton Jude, Daya Alwis, Wasantha Kumarasiri, Vishaka Siriwardena, Upeksha Swarnamalee, Sahan Ranwala, Janith Wickremage, Shan Bandu Weerasinghe are also featured in the story. It is produced by Vajira Rajapaksa.

‘Tikiri Suwanda’ Sunil Aruna Weerasiri’s maiden effort as a director resulted in ‘Tikiri Suwanda’. The story revolves around a child who is deprived of parental love. He is forced to be brought up in an unwelcoming background but as incidents follow, the child discovers of a way to win other’s respect and love.

The film not only boasts of a noteworthy cast which comprises seasoned actors like Joe Abeywickrema, Jayalal Rohana, Anula Karunatilake, Giriraj Kaushalya, Duleeka Marapana, Jayani Senanayake, Rodney Warnakula. Priyantha Seneviratne, Ramya Wanigasekara, Janaka Ranasinghe, Sarath Chandrasiri and others but it also debuts child actor Promod Mihiranga Weerasiri.

‘Hadawatha Mal Yayai’ Love, imagination and friendship are part of the theme in experienced filmmaker Ananda Wickramasinghe’s new movie ‘Hadawatha Mal Yayai’. This simple love story is produced by Tilak Kodikara.
