Jaffna, a tourists destination

Jaffna is slowly but steadily moving forward with the enthusiasm and entrepreneurial spirit of the courageous businessman opening opportunities in the tourism industry, mainly accommodation, which is a prime need for tourists.

According to people in the area there are 10 hotels and many Inns while three hotels still been occupied by the Army. Once these fall vacant the urgent need for accommodation will be catered. In addition to these the Naga Vihara rest also gives accommodation.

According to sources around 5,000 people visit Jaffna daily and though it is about 12 hours of travelling by road if the vehicle you are travelling is comfortable it will not be a problem.

Comfortable buses ply between Jaffna and Colombo daily.

There are many historic places a person could visit on holiday while in Jaffna, which includes the Naga Viharaya which is in the heart of Jaffna town as well as the Famous Nallur Temple not forgetting the churches.

A person who loves the water can take a dip many a times in the beautiful beaches of Point Pedro or along the coastal belt.

Jaffna Library is a favourite among the scholars when one could visit and also the Jaffna Fort.

There are many places one could visit and since the rains have started it's a beautiful site along the road to Jaffna.

It is a paradise for lovers of sea food be it cuttle fish, prawns, fish or crabs, the tantalizing taste makes you feel hungry. In addition the vadai, thosai, pittu or string hoppers as well as traditional favourites including sweets are a must to taste if you visit Jaffna.

The smile and the hospitality of the people is very refreshing be it in the hotel, shop or on the way.

There are many sweets as well as favourite Nelli crush and the Grape crush which you can take home and also toddy which is made in Jaffna. Don't forget to buy the different kinds of sweets made by women who are engaged in it as a cottage industry.

There are many handicrafts which you can bring home.

To ensure that you get a room in a good hotel reserve the names before three weeks as they are always full.

Obey the rules and regulations when entering a place of worship and most importantly see that you don't litter the place with plastic bottles sili sili bags and also try to adjust to their culture.
