On directive by President:

53 post offices for relocated IDPs

The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunication has taken steps to open 53 new post offices in areas where IDPs are resettled on priority basis on a directive by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, a Ministry source said.

According to the source, from end of January, 2010 the 53 post offices will operate in Killinochchi and Mullaitivu districts.

New postal workers will be appointed and those who serve on a temporary basis will be made permanent within a few months.

The post offices damaged during the war would be reconstructed and all facilities provided. Steps have been taken to distribute pre-paid telephone and internet cards to the public. After implementing the project, the Ministry also plans to open post offices in the Eastern Province and other districts where there are no post offices now.

Appointments will be made according to the vacancies available in the post offices in the above areas.

Internet and other important facilities will also be provided to the newly opened post offices and the existing post offices, Ministry source added.
