Kingswood and Prince of Wales score 1,121 runs in two half days

CRICKET: Inter-School cricket has been very popular down the ages and there has been a good following for matches. Moratuwa has produced some good cricketers down the years and one of Moratuwa’s well-known schools - Prince of Wales College had an enthralling game against Kingswood when they travelled up to Kandy in the first term of 1962.

Prince of Wales had an outright win under their belt against Richmond to boost their morale and they were brimming with confidence when they went upto Kandy to meet Kingswood.

Prince of Wales had Hyasti Aponso as captain and Kingswood had Owen Mottau as their skipper. It was interesting to see that two of the finest batsmen in the schools - that’s Owen Mottau and Hyasti Aponso were leading the two schools.

In the good old days the inter-school matches started at 12 noon and they were over on each day at 6 p.m. with the tea interval at 3.45 p.m. and there were no mandatory overs being bowled.

Besides Mottau, Kingswood had some fine cricketers in L. Sirisena, S. B. Elikawela, H. S. Perusinghe, M. Ghazali, allrounder D. Mahindadasa shared the new ball with D. Aluwihare.

The Cambrians had a allround side and Aponso had the service of Ryle de Mel, T. Munasinghe, N. Sannasgala, paceman Vernon de Mel and the present Interim Committee Chairman D. Somachandra de Silva as an allrounder.

After winning the toss and batting first, Owen Mottau led the run chase of Kingswood. Mottau made 153 and L. Sirisena too made 153 and the two of them were involved in a record partnership of 234 runs for the third wicket which enabled Kingswood to amass a total of 403 for 6 wickets at which score they declared. Prince of Wales were in somewhat of a hopeless position at the end of the first day with 4 wickets down for 83 runs. Then on the second day, Prince of Wales were dismissed for 181 runs. Ryle de Mel made 57 and Nihal Sannasgala 50. For Kingswood D. Aluwihare had the fine figures of 6 for 47.

The Cambrians were forced to follow-on, but the Moratuwa cricketers were equal to the task of making runs with R. de Mel making 109 and Aponso unbeaten with 165 and the two were involved in a fourth wicket partnership of 176. Then Hemal Mendis - the opening batsman made 54 and D. S. de Silva 37.

With the Cambrians making a big score of 428 for 5 wickets and then declaring, the task was too much for Kingswood to go for a win - 217 runs in 90 minutes. At close of play, Kingswood were 109 for 3 wickets with opener L. Sirisena making 52.

The match produced 1,121 runs in two half days of cricket and it was somewhat of a record for a school cricket match in those days. It was a high-scoring draw.
