Maneesha 11/143 bowls his best for Royal

CRICKET: Acting captain Maneesha Thanthirigoda with a matchbag of eleven wickets bowled Royal College to a historic six wicket outright victory over St. Joseph's College in their 113th annual inter school cricket encounter which concluded at Reid Avenue yesterday.

Thanthirigoda followed up his four wicket haul in the first innings with a career best figures of seven wickets for 98 as St. Joseph's College were dismissed for 204 runs in their second innings.

Royal's victory had a great amount of significance as they last beat St. Joseph's College way back in 1993 at this same venue under the captaincy of Gamini Perera who is incidentally now their Head Coach.

Royal: 306 for 9 decl and 53 for 4 (C. Rajaratne 27 n.o, R. Thathil 3 for 16)

St. Joseph's: 152 (J. Jayasinghe 26, R. Thathil 42, M. Thanthirigoda 4 for 45, L. Landawela 2 for 32, C. Rajaratne 2 for 9) and 204 (S. Samarawickrema 68, S. Jayatilleke 20, M. Thanthirigoda 7 for 98, R. Rambukwella 2 for 28)

Wesley by an inngs

Wesley College bounced back from last week's setback to beat Kingswood College Kandy outright by an innings and 44 runs in their annual inter school Under 19 cricket tournament match which concluded at Campbell Park yesterday.

Skipper Dulanjan Wijesinghe returned astonishing bowling figures of five wickets for seven runs as Kingswood College were shot out for a mere 69 runs in their second innings.

Earlier Wesley College went on to build up a good first innings lead of 113 runs following some useful contributions from Fonseka, Muzammil and Jayawardena. This was a memorable win for Wesley College considering the fact that their previous victory against Kingswood College was recorded eight years ago.

Kingswood: 93 and 69 (D. Wijesinghe 5 for 7, D. Barthalomuesz 3 for 16)

Wesley: 206 (A. Fonseka 37, B. Muzammil 35, S. Jayawardena 25)

Nipun shines in drawn game

Dynamic all rounder Nipun Karunanayake hit a sparkling century as Nalanda College forced a draw to their inter school under 19 cricket tournament match against D. S. Senanayake College which concluded at Wijerama Mawatha yesterday. Karunanayake faced only 85 deliveries and hoisted four sixes and struck eight boundaries while Adeesha Nanayakkara also hit a 73 ball 88 inclusive of half a dozen of sixes and four boundaries.

Earlier some determined batting from the D. S. Senanayake late order helped them to snatch a close three runs first innings lead over their opponents.

Nalanda: 222 and 292 for 4 (G. Medawatte 49, C. Rodrigo 33, N. Karunanayake 100 n.o, A. Nanayakkara 88, M. Ijaz 4 for 65)

D. S.Senanayake: 225 (A. Weerasinghe 40, M. Weerasinghe 52, T. Silva 25, D. Jayasinghe 3 for 26, N. Karunanayake 3 for 59, S. Tennekoon 2 for 19)

Thonians take major honors

Two fighting half centuries from opener Sachin Devage (51) and P. Madushan (54) helped Ananda College take first innings honours in their annual inter school Under 19 cricket tournament match against S. Thomas' College which ended in a draw at Mount Lavinia yesterday.

S. Thomas': 189 and 52 for 6 (M. Rasuwan 4 for 12)

Ananda: 238 (S. Devage 51, P. Madushan 54, R. Sharmen 43, M. Jayaratne 41, M. Rasuwan 26, C. Pathirana 5 for 50, D. Walpita 2 for 8)
