Colombo University graduates express confidence in President
The Graduates’ Forum of the University of Colombo has urged the
public to vote for President Mahinda Rajapaksa who could protect
democracy and can bring prosperity to all our fellow citizens. The full
text of the statement by the University of Colombo Graduate Forum is as
follows:
“We believe that it is the leadership of President Mahinda Rajapaksa
that paved the way for the country to eradicate terrorism and to bring
peace. And it was President Rajapaksa who united the country after many
years. Eradication of terrorism ensured the people’s right to live,
enhance, and ensure freedom from fear. Irrespective of nationality,
religion and other differences, we all enjoy the benefits of peace and
freedom.
“We also give full credit to President Rajapaksa for not forgetting
the development aspect of the country even during the war period. We
cannot forget the number of highways constructed and the new concept of
laying concrete to develop the road system in rural areas, which has
been neglected perhaps for decades.
“Five international harbours are being constructed around the
country, including the mega project in Hambantota. Upper Kotmale and
Norochchalai are examples of development in the power sector.
“In his election manifesto, “Mahinda Chintana II”, the President has
put forward several promises ensuring a better future for every citizen
of this country through development, eliminating corruption, through
necessary political reforms and good governance and continuous effort of
social welfare and well-being.“We believe the President and his capacity
and ability to deliver the realistic promises he made in his election
manifesto.
“Looking at the other camp, we see a coalition of no hopes, no
vision, no program and no consensus. There are only a few reasons for
their being together: opposition to and hate for President Mahinda
Rajapaksa, disappointments and hopelessness: all about destruction and
nothing on construction.
“We foresee a great danger if Sarath Fonseka is elected President.
There will be immediate power struggles between conflicting groups such
as the UNP, JVP, Muslim Congress and TNA.
It is highly unlikely that Fonseka will deliver his promises not only
to the public, but also to his fellow coalition members. Political
instability and power struggles are inevitable. There is a great danger
of the country falling in to the hands of a military dictatorship.
“Therefore, we believe this Presidential Election is a decisive
junction of our motherland. Irrespective of ethnicity, religion and any
other differences, vote for President Mahinda Rajapaksa who can protect
our motherland, who can protect democracy and who can bring prosperity
to all our fellow citizens,” the statement said.
