Mirza to hang up her racquet post marriage

While she’s an ace on the tennis court, Sania Mirza has won the match of her life and this one involves a whole different kind of love.

Sania is all set to become a blushing bride with her recent engagement to 23 year old Hyderabadi and childhood friend Sohrab Mirza. In these respects it seems Sania lucked out. Sania is also from Hyderabad and then the obvious - she doesn’t have to change her last name. There has been no date set for a wedding.

Last year, when she announced their engagement, Mirza repeated her wish to give up the sport after the couple set up home together. India’s leading player Sania Mirza yesterday was happy to answer questions about her impending marriage.

“I’ve said that all my life. I don’t know (how) it’s become breaking news two days ago,” she said yesterday. “They’re acting like I’m getting married tomorrow and giving up the day after tomorrow. That’s not happening. There are a lot of things you have to work out when two people get to that stage of marriage. It’s still a long way off.” Indian media reports quoted both her father and fiance saying they supported Mirza in her decision to give up her sports career.

Mirza is the first Indian woman to win a grand slam title when she claimed last year’s Australian Open mixed doubles with compatriot Mahesh Bhupathi.

“It’s just my personal choice. I mean I just think that after marriage your priorities change in a lot of different ways,” she said. “If I had to keep playing tennis and travel 35 weeks a year, why get married? I’d like to be with my husband, I think.”

Sohran and Sania have known each other for a few years and their families have been friendly as well. Sohrab has plans to go to the UK to pursue an MBA like Sania. While Sania was away in Paris playing in the French Open her father confirmed the rumours of an engagement. However, they did state that the wedding would not happen for awhile.

And just because she’s getting married don’t think she’ll be leaving the tennis courts anytime soon. Her family has confirmed hat she’ll continue playing tennis for at least some time more.

For the next 10 days she is concentrating on making a third Australian Open mixed doubles final in a row with Bhupathi.
