What a voter awaits...

Thee this vote I cast
Be a blockage
To the swift washout
Of all our heritage
Which was so dedicatedly preserved
By us for centuries
If not a complete gateway
To Dhammadeepa
May it be a breaker
Of all toxic inflows
Which gradually drowns
The consciousness of our people
May thee be a strength
For the people
May thee protect my motherland
Until such time the people are awake
Fully to the rays of the Sun of Dhamma
May thee not let me repent
Let me be not a supporter of killings
May thee stand on behalf of truth
Letting us stand on our feet
A cue to the glorious Lanka
Enshrined here again
May my vote carry this message
To all hearts

- Yasomani Wanigasundara

Caw caw

Five thirty early morning, sometimes even at night
I hear the disjunctive cawing
Anticipating dawn or disturbed by hunger.

Mother used to say
It gives lot of Merit to feed the crows
Out of eternal hunger.
What do we give?
Githel pankada!

What Merit to give an animal such a thing.

Angered by my questions
She used to hush me up
Saying it can digest anything.
So much for gaining Merit!

Seeing them greedily gulp
Scorching pieces of cloth, not the milk rice
Soaked in stinking oil
In ignorance and hunger
I must confess I forgot my need for Merit
And sought civilized ways.

Eternal promise

Do not fear my dear friend
I will stand by you, when the winds get strong
And you don't have courage to be strong and sail on
Do not doubt my wish to help
I know I love you more than you'll ever know
I know how you struggle through life
How many needles pierce your heart
One small mistake you did, made your life a living hell
Don't worry my dear pal
Even in the thunderous storms and deadly lightning
I'll hold your hand so that you stand still
Fight your battle as you've never done before
For here I make a vow to be at your side
Even at the deadliest war.

The night sky

The sun goes down to the sea
From the west of our earth
Dark clouds come floating by
Covering the whole bright sky
The teeny children of the moon
Start peeping through the clouds
As if little children playing
Hide and seek
The evening star glows
But not as bright as the moon
The moon lights the sky at night
Pouring its moon beam down upon the trees
While the bunny sleeps peacefully
The man in the moon snores
And he says it's time for bed
It is time for bed, Good night.

New Year greetings

Once again
A new year has appeared on your doorstep
With greetings
Of prosperity, joy, good will and bright days
Throughout the year ahead
To look back
And to look to the future
To think new and to become new
And to start anew
A journey towards success
So, let's greet the NEW YEAR
With a smile on the face!

A refugee

No house
To relax
No one
To love
No one
To await
No hopes
To live
No rain
To grow
No cattle
To nurse
No words
To utter
No tears
To shed
No joy
To enjoy
No death
To relieve
Either
