Ratnam trounce New Youngs 3-1

Ratnam Sports Club, Katahena with the victory achieved over New Youngs Sports Club, Wennappuwa entered the semi-final of the Invitation soccer tournament organized by the Colombo Football Club.

The winner of the championship will receive the `Phoenix Cup' sponsored by Phoenix Lanka Ltd and a cash award of Rs 100,000.

On Friday Ratnam SC defeated New Youngs SC three goals to one at City Football ground.

This match was earlier scheduled to be played on Saturday January 30. On a request made by Wennappuwa team the organisers advanced the game Friday to Jan 29.

Ratnam SC were in front at the halfway mark with the goal scored by E. B. Channa in the 35th minute. Ten minutes into the next session J. R. Pradeep put Ratnam further ahead.

N. A. de Silva, New Youngs SC reduced the lead fifteen minutes, later. But Ratnam SC held on to their lead and extended it with E. B. Channa scoring once again with three minutes away from the final whistle to seal the win for Kotahena Club 3-1.

The first semi-final between Renown SC and Blue Star SC from Kalutara is scheduled for February 6 while Ratnam SC will confront the winners of toda's game between Cooray SC and Old Bens SC on Sunday Feb. 7 in the second semi-final at 3.30 p.m. at the same venue. - BP
