Friday night Rumours
by Mahes Perera
The name may create images of
disbelief but ten years down the line the band Rumours has been
identified with music that is entertaining and performed with style and
conviction. Which is why young groovers and not so young groovers make a
date with Rumours. Where do they hang out? Commencing this auspicious
year 2010, Rumours spread their captivating vibes at the legendary night
club Blue Leopard at the G.O.H. The guys were regulars at the Taj ‘Mix
Bar’ on Fridays for a record three and a half years and then decided to
skate across to the Blue Leopard, to make Fridays a happening day.
Ten years ago these five friends while studying at their alma mater
St. Joseph’s College, Colombo banded together to make a fruitful career
in music. They still remain the same entity with no changes in
personnel, complementing one another. And Blue Leopard should consider
itself lucky.
The boys have an elastic repertoire of the best in retro and a wide
range of pop, country classics, reggae, rock and the blues. So here’s
your chance to say goodbye to your work blues on a Friday night by
chilling it out with the Rumours pack. Speaking with the leader Neomal
Pieris who plays guitar and handles vocals we learnt that one advantage
in the band is that all the members are singers.
“There’s Dayal Athukorala who plays lead guitar and sings, Duminda
Hettiarachchi who is our bassist and a vocalist, our drummer Narendra
Gunarathna handles vocals too and so does our keyboardist Tharaka
Wijesekera. This gives us the opportunity to have a variety of singing
styles and by tossing the songs around, we get a better response”
comments Neomal.
If you want to have an entertaining evening then make your tracks to
the Blue Leopard on Fridays and soak in the retro sounds which is now a
trend amongst most of the pop groups here and abroad.

his music to the fore in Sri Lanka, he tied up with VanLuup and DJ
Shiyam of Colombo House Mafia to give sizzling numbers all the way.

Korea, The Philippines, Colombia, Russia, Morocco, Bahrain, Abu Dhabi,

his collaboration with Richard Murray & Kaysee with the song ‘Set Me
Free’ and the Bekah medley “Only One”. The Colombo House Mafia that
brought the hot sounds of Gordon Edge live to Sri Lanka in 2009 featured
famous DJ Paul Deighton on his worldwide mayhem tour.
Ministry of Sound which is a London based Entertainment Company and
night club is the agent for many leading DJs and Producers worldwide,
including notable examples Bob Sinclair, Tiesto, Paul Van Dyk, Pete

The organisers at Zouk choreographed the MOS night themselves with

banners, logos, balloons and special visual effects to every partyer the
same feeling as they would do in London.
Hottie DJ and spinning whiz DJ Shiyam who is one of the country’s
movers and shakers joined forces with Van Luup to do the night right. It
was definitely a night to remember!
