Mobile
phones - a popular device

Mobile phones play an important role in our day-to-day lives. A majority
of people have mobile phones today. Mobile phones are electronic devices
that are mainly used to communicate with each other. But today mobile
phones are more than that.
Due to the advancement in technology, mobile phones are presented in
various forms and types. They are available in various colours, shapes,
sizes and brands.
There are low-priced phones, which only facilitate communication with
each other, while expensive phones comprise internet access, facilities
to listen to the radio, take photographs, watch videos and also
bluetooth facilities. If you use a mobile phone with these extra
features with a good intention, the results would also be fruitful.
However, the purpose such phones serve depends on the mental status of
the user.
In general, mobile phones are a good form of communication enabling
immediate feedback no matter where you are in the world. It’s a great
device to keep in touch with family and friends.

A
cricket match I enjoyed
It was a good and enjoyable cricket match we had with twenty-two
players and one extra who was selected as the umpire. His name was
Little Jokey. We had the correct number of players to make the two
teams, which we named as Sri Lanka and England. Our parents and some
others were the spectators cheering us on. I was in the Sri Lankan team.
The toss was won by us. When the second player got out, I went into play
and the people cheered.

The first shot I played was a sixer. The ball went flying in the sky
like a bullet. After that I played until I passed the half century mark.
As we had scored a hundred and twenty one runs, I hit the next ball
aiming for a sixer, but a fielder who was near it caught it. However,
for the pressure, the ball fell from his hand. At first I thought that I
was out, but when I was informed it wasn’t a clean catch I was very
glad. I scored well past a century, and I was very tired as I had played
for a long time.
I couldn’t stand straight. The bowler knew that I was tired and he
bowled a powerful ball straight at the stumps; I played the wrong stroke
and was out. As I left the ground,I felt very proud of my achievement
because, my parents and all the people were cheering me. I had played
well and scored a hundred and fifty runs for my team. The total runs we
scored was 295 runs.
The England team played well, but they made only 250 runs. The Sri
Lankan team won the match and I was chosen the Man of the Match. I had
scored the most runs. I was presented with bouquets and prizes.
It was not only an unforgettable match, but also an enjoyable match.

Protect our
feathered friends
Birds
are fascinating creatures that add beauty to the environment. I like to
look at them without them being aware of it. I feel that they are
fortunate than us because they can fly whenever and wherever they want.
There are many species of colourful birds. The biggest bird is the
ostrich, but it is one of the few birds that cannot fly.
The smallest bird is the hummingbird. It’s fascinating to watch how
it hovers over flowers, flapping its wings rapidly. Birds make nests.
The tailor bird makes its nest very methodically. Once when we went to
Mahiyangana my father showed me these beautifully made nests which were
hanging from the branches majestically. My friends, we must not harm
birds and destroy their habitats.

Value of sports

Sports is very important to our lives. When we engage in sports, it
helps us to maintain a healthy mind and body. Mostly children and youth
are interested in sports which not only improves our health but also
enliven our spirits. There are many sports which can be categorised as
indoor and outdoor sports. They include table tennis, basketball,
badminton, cricket, netball, and swimming. Sports also help us to
develop a good personality. Sports is an extra-curricular activity in
all schools. The national game of our country is volleyball. The first
thing to learn in sports is to accept defeat. Getting involved in a
sporting activity helps us to build a healthy and cheerful life.

Newspapers - a
leading source of information
There are so many sources of information today such as books,
newspapers, dictionaries, television, internet and so on. However, I
feel that newspapers are still the leading source of information.
These various mediums are good and we can get lots of information
from them, especially the internet. It has become the fastest and the
most popular source of information because people can easily access the
internet. But not everyone has a computer nor can everyone go to a net
cafe to do so.
So, though there are many sources of information such as the
internet, the newspaper continues to remain the leading source because
everyone can easily buy a newspaper at a reasonable price or even borrow
one to read. It can be carried anywhere too, unlike a computer.
There are so many newspapers in Sri Lanka today in all three
languages. Some of them are the Silumina , Sunday Observer and
Thinakaran .
Newspapers carry various types of articles and we can know about
what’s happening currently around the country and also in the world.
Newspapers bring us a lot of news and views about global issues.
There are also employment, consumer and educational advertisements.
We can find jobs, goods, lands and vehicles through the newspapers.
They are very important for everyone. Through the news and other
articles we read in newspapers, we can improve our knowledge as well as
our language skills. Some newspapers introduce various educational
articles and information that is very useful.
