Splendour of Mahaweli

When the sun unveils the day
Lovely virgin blooms
Open their eyes
If you can go closer
You will hear them say
"Wish you a very happy day"

Just before the noon
all the far away hills
disguise themselves
in a vast olive cloth
with lovely apple spots

Behold, how the dusk melts
and those giant mounts
raise their dark hands
to touch the hanging stars

When you feel your eyes are heavy
and you are all alone
in the thick darkness
just listen

Singing her own sweet song
the mighty Mahaweli flows

Thilanka C. Ranatunga

Dear 'King of Pop'

Once an unusual star go away to the sky
Suddenly
This time for good
all the world feel
"King of Pop"
You are surely
Your death is unbearable
but we must bear it
because we can't do anything
Some of your fans wished to see you
but you have shatterd their dreams,
I should tell you it is not your fault
your melodious songs, sweet monuments
are eternal,
We appreciate your great dedication
"Michael Jackson"
Come again and "HEAL THE WORLD"

Navodya S. Kumarihami

After dryness....

Once,
The tree was bare
Yet, now....
Fresh and new leaves' re sprouting
Smoothly......
Affectionately....

Morning dew

I woke up early in the morning
And opened my window wide
To see the dew outside
Drops of small water
Keep falling on the leaves
A rose about to open
Its petals full of dew

As I gaze outside
The beauty of nature
Took me by surprise
With the chirping birds
And colourful butterflies
That awake and drink off the morning dew

What a beautiful sight to behold
God's creation untold
As I gaze the dew shines like crystals
The sun begins to rise, calling a new day
Melting off the morning dew...

The Railway line

However we jump
We can't touch the sky
Sky never reaches the sea
Sea never reaches the sky

Like the sky and the sea
However we try to get closer
You're miles away from me
I am miles away from you

Moon and the sun
Can't shine together
Star and the sun
Can't glitter together
Earth never reaches the sky
The sky never reaches the earth

Like the earth and the sky
However we try
You never get closer to me
I never get closer to you

Thus, we two are similar
To two parallel railway lines
Which never meet together.

- Ivanthi de Silva

Madness

You call me MAD
Why?
Is it because, I feed the poor more?
You think it’s sane to dance and drink
The whole night through without a wink?
When our brave soldiers are
Dying to protect foolish people
like you?
God’s message is unity and peace
Judgement day will decide
Whether you or I am mad.

- Mrs. S. M. Thahir
