1,000 flats for Berawewa dwellers

Moves are underway to construct 1,000 flats in Colombo for the
dwellers of Berawewa area under the Berawewa housing development
project, the Urban Development and Sacred Area Development Ministry (UDSADM)
sources said.
According to the Ministry sources in the first phase of the project a
four storeyed housing apartment comprising 320 housing units is being
constructed in Dematagoda area for the dwellers of the Berawewa area.
The Ministry sources noted that the construction work is nearing the
completion. The estimated cost for each housing unit is Rs. 2.5 million
the sources added.
An officer attached to the Ministry said that UDSAD Ministry has
focused attention not only towards improving the standards of the cities
but also providing permanent houses for the slum dwellers in the Colombo
metropolitan area.
The Urban Development Authority is playing a pivotal role in
identifying and fulfilling the housing needs of the slum dwellers as
well as those who live below the poverty line in the Colombo
metropolitan area.
A thirteen storeyed administrative complex costing Rs. 4 billion will
be constructed in "Sethsiripaya" Battaramulla with a view to developing
the Colombo city as the business city.
The Ministry sources stated that after the opening of the
administrative complex in Battaramulla several Government offices and
Ministries will be shifted to Battaramulla.
This will result in minimising the traffic congestion in the Colombo
city while developing it as the business city.
