Mallika Satchithanandan - a new Asian Meet record in 5 km Race

ATHLETICS: It's that veteran woman athlete - Mallika Satchithananda
who has hit the news again! Participating in the Open Masters
International Invitation Athletic Championships in Chennai earlier this
month, this 'never-say-die' athlete from Sri Lanka Telecom won three
gold medals at the meet, competing in the 70 + age group.
The able and very willing competitor that she has been right through
her career, Mallika established a new Asian Meet Record in the 5 km Race
Walk with a winning time of 35 minutes 57.6 seconds. Besides his
outstanding performance, she won three other gold medals 200 metres, 400
metres and 5,000 metres, making it a total of 4 gold medals from maximum
of four events.
Last year the Sri Lanka State Services Athletic Championship was held
in December at the Sports Ministry Grounds and Mallika was awarded the
Best Performance Trophy for women under-70 representing Sri Lanka
Telecom.
Athletics and Mallika Satchithananda has been performing well right
through the years. Having taken to veterans athletics in 1985, she has
been performing well throughout, but her best performance ever has been
in Indonesia in 1986 at the Fourth Asian Veterans Championships where
she won 7 gold medals an established 4 new Asian records. Then at the
International veterans Championships held in Singapore in 1987, Mallika
won 6 golds.
