TABLE TENNIS: The promosing paddler Senel Ratnayake of Royal College
proved his class to be selected as the Best Junior Table Tennis Player
in the Gampaha District for the year 2009.
Sarath Gunaratne, former national player, and present President of
Mercantile Table Tennis Association was the chief guest at the annual
colours ceremony of the Gampaha TTA held at Samara Banquet Hall,
Gampaha.The 12-year-old Senel is an emerging star among the younger
table tennis players.
The year seven student, Senel, started playing table tennis at the
tender age of 6 years and became the under-7 singles title winner to
carry away the D. S. Senanayake Challenge Cup at the Western Province
Table Tennis tournament played in 2005.
He was ranked number one player in the under-12 and under-15 events
for the year 2009. Senel became runner-up in the under-10 TBHAR
All-Island Novices Championships in 2008 and also was runner-up in the
under-12 singles at the Western Province Junior ranking tournament. He
was a member of the Royal College under-10 table tennis team in 2007
that emerged the winner at the All-Island Inter-School Table Tennis team
championships. He continued his good form in the 2009 All-Island
Inter-School Table Tennis team championships and helped Royal to be
runner-up in the under-12 category. Master Senel Ratnayake is coached by
former ace table tennis 'star' N. H. Perera who fared prominently at
international championships for Sri Lanka.
According to 'NH' Senel is a talented paddler and he is certain to
achieve success. He has the ability to become a good player as he has
shown good achievements as a young paddler. |
