Sri Lanka is a country with an agro-based economy
though most exports in this sector are not among the top earners.
With the introduction of the open economy in 1977 the apparel sector
received a major boost and overtook agro exports and reached the top
slot in exports as the focus on agriculture was lost. However, the
present government realised the importance of the agriculture sector
and the major positive impact it would have on the rural economy and
granted several benefits and concessions which are now helping the
sector in a big way.

Ranminitenna tele-cinema park opens on Tuesday
Sri Lankan cinema and teledrama fans are in for
a treat with the opportunity soon to view quality local films and
teledramas that will be produced at the country’s first tele-cinema
park, the Mahinda Rajapaksa National Tele-Cinema Park at
Ranminitenna in the Southern Province which will open on March 30.

Five years of development - Nuwara Eliya
district:
Sees the light of day
Some of the major ongoing development projects
that were implemented in the Nuwara Eliya district for improving the
living conditions of the impoverished plantation community and the
rural population include the Upper Kotmale Hydro Power Project (UKHP),
the Gama Neguma Jathika Saviya Program, the Gama Neguma Program and
the Second Community Water Supply and Healthcare Project. All these
programs were implemented under ‘Mahinda Chintana’ during the last
four years.
