Sharp drop in election violence

Two-hundred-and-fifty-eight election related complaints had been reported and this shows that there has been a sharp drop in election violence, said police media spokesman S. P. Prishantha Jayakody. He said that 2,877 election related complaints had been reported during the 2004 April general election period.

“No major incidents had been reported so far. Even the complaints received after nomination day related to minor incidents,” he said. Meanwhile, 58,700 police officers, 19,000 STF and Army officers will be deployed to ensure a trouble-free election.

A DIG and an SSP will be assigned to supervise the main counting office in each district and all police areas will be under an ASP and a chief inspector to supervise election activities on polling day. A police mobile patrol will be conducted round the clock on polling day and the police have called upon people to inform the police of any incidents promptly.
