Royal all the way!

The Royal College Class of 1972
will celebrate the Royal College 175th anniversary by setting aboard the
Jetliner cruise ship at their OBA night. Doing it with a difference, the
night will see funds raised in aid of charity.
“Nearly all of our tickets have been sold out as the Royalists have
been supportive of the charitable cause and are keen to see how it will
be like on the Jetliner” said President of the Royal College batch of
1972, Saman De Silva. The charitable side of the project is uplifting
the community at the Punitha Nagar village in Jaffna where lives will be
rebuilt and strengthened.
They are keen on opening a community centre and a medical facility
centre where others can also add to the cause. “We are keen on working
with many people to help our brothers and sisters in the North as they
have suffered a lot” said De Silva. He further commented, “It is our
duty as the lucky ones to help them out at their time of need when the
country is witnessing a lasting peace.”
The batch also calls upon others to take over the venture to add to
serving the village by implementing state-of-the-art medical solutions
and providing high-technology equipment so that they can enjoy the same
services we enjoy in the developed city.
At the moment, this village is named as KPMG Village Punithar Nagarr
and was developed by the KPMG Foundation with participation by Hatton
National Bank Plc in the form of financing the construction of a
community library and drinking water wells. This has helped the
community over there immensely who are in the process of resettlement
but still more needs to be done.
By setting the example for others to follow, the Royal College Class
of 1972 has been always keen on doing something beneficial to society.
“Why we decided to go for a community centre was because it may be used
for multi-purpose social activities,” said De Silva. “Going forward,
such projects will be eventually extended to South, East and the West
for the benefit of needy people across the island,” he said. The
Treasurer of the Royal College Class of 1972 Sriyantha Wakwella said
that they all work unitedly in brotherhood to help the community.
“We count the success of plenty of charitable projects because we
have been united in mind and spirit. Our group consists of peers ranging
from various ethnicities and religions who work extremely well together.
They are also in top positions in corporations in Sri Lanka and around
the world” he said.
The Royal College Class of 1972 also has done up the Squash courts at
the Sports complex at the Royal College and have helped with IDP relief
projects which are among their charitable projects. he Chairman of the
Fund Raising Committee Azad Mansoor said they appreciate the support
extended by the Royal College Union, the main body of past students of
Royal College and all the Old Royalists and their families. The Royal
College OBA night will definitely be a night to remember and in aid of a
worthy cause!
