“I earn foreign exchange”

There is neither exact evidence nor records to reveal the origin of my ancestors. The Mahavamsa the greatest chronicle records from the time of king Dutugamunu in the 5th century B.C., my ancestors have been in close association with the royal families, even during the Kandy era. However, I was born in a village called Boyawalana in Alawwa which is little beyond Warakapola in Sri Lanka. My parents are cultivators and they cultivate many crops in their home garden.

The most popular crop is known as betel. There are growers of betel who own at least three acres and earn lucrative incomes. So my father was a betel grower who earned a good income.

I was the eldest in my family and my father looked after me well and groomed me to be a good trading partner in this lucrative business. Betel is a creeper which grows along a pole or a tree. From my tender age, I was subject to acute problems in weather conditions and rising price of fertiliser which retarded my growth.

However, as I was looked after well by my parents, given good food and plenty of water, I became healthy and bloomed into a beautiful woman.
