Celebrate victory peacefully- IGP

Inspector General of Police Mahinda Balasuriya yesterday appealed to candidates, supporters and the public to celebrate victory peacefully without violating the law.

The IGP thanked Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake, all ranks of Police personnel including Senior DIG (Elections) Gamini Navaratne and his staff, STF, candidates, the three Security Forces, police and State officers and the public who assisted the police to ensure a free and fair election. Processions and meetings are banned for the next seven days. The IGP appealed to the public to assist the police to maintain law and order.

He also thanked the electronic and print Media for their support given to him and his officers during the elections. No major incidents were reported during the election day. The IGP also thanked party supporters for their assistance to the Police and the three forces during the election day.

The IGP said certain groups alleged that the election was not fair but those allegations had proved futile.
