‘Don’t use disciplinary action as political tool’:
Fonseka in good shape
by Dhaneshi YATAWARA
Military Spokesman Major General Prasad Samarasinghe said the parties
accusing the authorities of neglecting Sarath Fonseka’s health should
not use the military disciplinary action as a political tool.
Health reports of Sarath Fonseka, who is now in military custody, are
shown to the doctor recommended by his family, after a medical
examination by the Naval Medical Officer, Maj.Gen. Samarasinghe said.
Though the Democratic National Alliance continues to complain that
Fonseka’s health condition is getting worse, the doctors have come to
the conclusion that he was in good shape and under thorough medical
care.
A Senior Chest Physician at the Chest Clinic of the Colombo General
Hospital examined Sarath Fonseka on several occasions and was made
available in all instances at the Navy Headquarters following requests
by his wife Anoma Fonseka to the Army Commander for special medical
advice.
The second Court Martial on charges against Sarath Fonseka will be
held tomorrow as scheduled, Maj.Gen. Samarasinghe said.
The second Court Martial is expected to hear four charges on
Fonseka’s contravention of military procurement procedures. There are
seven charges against Fonseka of which three would deal with his alleged
involvement in politics while being in active service. President of the
Court Martial Maj. Gen. Milinda Pieris, members Maj.Gen. S.W.L.
Daulagala and Maj.Gen. Mahinda Hathurusinghe will sit in the tribunal
and Rear Admiral W.W.J.S. Fernando will serve as the Judge Advocate for
both Courts Martial.
The first Court Martial was to try Fonseka on charges against his
participation in political work while in active service and the sittings
will resume on May 5.
