by S. M. Jiffrey ABDEEN, Kandy Sports Corr.
Kingswood College opened their inter school rugby season with an
emphatic 23 points (4 tries, 1 penalty) to 10 (1 goal, 1 penalty) win
over St. Anthony's College in their schools under 19 `A' Division rugby
tournament match played at Nittawela yesterday. At half time the
Kingswoodians led 8-3.
A thunderstorm before the match washed out all makings on the ground
and as a result, the match could not be started on time.
The match finally got underway 45 minutes late and the last 20
minutes was played in darkness with the referee finding it difficult to
identify the players as both teams were wearing blue jerseys.
It was the Antonians who set the score board moving through a penalty
fired by stand off Chamara Kumara.
But two minute later the Kingswoodians equalised through a 35 meter
penalty put over by full back and skipper Rajith Sansoni.
The best try to the match came in the 12th minute of play when
Kingswoodians full back Rajith Sansoni grabbed the loose ball and made a
sizzling 75 meter run slipping tackles to score far right but failed to
add the extra points.
After the turn around the Kingswoodian increased through a try by
scrum half Mohamed Afsal and this went unconverted. Kingswood 13-3.
In the 6th minute of the second half the Antonians narrowed the gap
when flanker Sajid Laheer powered his way to touch down far right. Stand
off Chamara Kumara made a beautiful conversion.
St. Anthony's 10-13.
But the Antonians came back storming into when scrum half Mohamed
Afsal spotting a gap breathed the opponents defence to score mid right
and this try to went unconverted.
In the dying stages of the game flanker Chethiya Wadugodapitiya
scored close to the posts for Kingswood and this try too went
unconverted.
