Petes a great win over Isipatana
By Ranjan ANANDAPPA
St. Peter's gave a dazzling display of fast and furious rugby to
record a 27 points (2 goals, 2 tries, a penalty) to 8 points (1try, 1
penalty) win over Isipathana in their under 19 Singer League opening
match at Havelock Park yesterday.
Isipathana did not have much of a chance against a superior outfit
which dominated proceedings from the outset besides some sporadic
moments. The Peterite forwards and the back division formed an effective
combination to drive Isipathana into submission. The Isipathana were
unable to put the breaks on the speedy Peterite three quarters and
whenever they were in pocession looked extrmely penetrative.
After Isipathana opened scoring off a penalty early in the first half
through Prasad Devendra the Peterites found the equaliser through
Meedin's boot.
Peterites forged ahead with two tries when Bhanuka Nanayakkara and
centre Danuka Ranjan gave their side a 15\3 lead at lemons.
Danuka Ranjan sprinted about 90 meters to score under the post and
Meedin added the extra points. Both sides gave a good display despite
the wet conditions underfoot, and the Peterite's power prevailed when
they crossed their opponents line twice after the short whistle. Flanker
Shenal Dias and Suranga Nanayakkra scored a try each which Meedin
addeing the extra points on one occasion.
During the dying stages of the game Isipathana's Suresh Fonseka
reduced the deficit touching down for an unconverteed try.
