Money Museum in Matara
The third Money Museum of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) was
opened at the Bank's Southern Provincial Office at Anagarika Dharmapala
Mawatha, Matara on May 6.
The museum traces the evolution of money and exhibits a wide range of
currencies used in Sri Lanka from the 3rd Century BC, through the period
the country was a colony of Western powers to the period of
independence, after which the CBSL became the sole authority to issue
currency in Sri Lanka.
All notes and coins issued for circulation and commemorative coins
and notes issued to mark special events and personalities by the CBSL
since its establishment, are on display at this museum.
The public including schoolchildren, as well as numismatists,
especially in the Southern and neighbouring provinces and visitors to
the South could gain a wealth of information at this museum. The museum
is open to the public from 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. daily, except public
and bank holidays and entrance will be free of charge.
