Set the date for dynamic dance!
Shiromi Perera needs no
introduction to the Sri Lankan dance floor. As one of Sri Lanka’s
leading Latin and ballroom instructors, Shiro has progressed from
traditional dance methods to pumpy heart-racing vibes of body grooves.
So in a bid to boost the love of dance and music, Shiro will showcase
her students, many dance winners and beginners on one platform at her
concert, ‘Rhythm of Life’.
“The concert will help those who lack confidence and those who are
also not aware about Latin American and ballroom dancing to actually
learn to enjoy dancing because they will see how easy it is once you
learn the proper movements and build up confidence”. She added, “Some of
the dances are choreographed by the students themselves to a very
professional level and that shows how much confidence dancing can
actually bring.”
The concert will be held next Sunday (May 16) at the British School
auditorium. More than 35 dancers from her Rhythm World school will
gyrate and swivel to the music which will see all dance lovers tapping
their toes.
There will be 14 dance items in total and these have all been
choreographed by Shiromi and her students. Dance is a fun stress
reliever and will also present versatility and unity in diversity. The
dance forms will range from Latin and ballroom to contemporary,
freestyle, hip-hop and Kandyan culminating with a jazzy up-beat medley
from that dance flick ‘Grease’.
In addition to revealing the glitter and glamour of the dance
students, many guest artistes such as Noeline Honter, Ann Nathan, Umaria
and Umara, Soundari David and her choral group Soul Sounds accompanied
by Christopher Prins, and Sohan and the Experiments will be offering
their dance twist to the occasion. The singing legend Sohan and his
enthusiastic band will be supporting many of the talented stars to keep
the audience entertained and enthralled.
Shiromi has won several accolades by being a dance guru in Sri Lanka.
Recently, she became the first Sri Lankan dance instructor to
professionally qualify and gain appointment as a member of the World
Dance Council Asian Amateur League. “I am planning to make this an
annual event and I especially plan to have the first Sri Lanka Word
Dance Council Asian Amateur League Dance Championship in 2011” said
Shiro.
She is also a representative of the International Dance Organization
for other forms of dance in Sri Lanka. Shiro’s dance school has grown by
leaps and bounds in recent years with more and more students enrolling
in her medal level classes (Bronze, Silver and Gold), which are held on
weekends at Kalalaya.
The medal tests are conducted once a year by foreign examiners and
this year the results were outstanding, with most of her students
obtaining high marks. Her beginners and advanced level classes are also
very popular, not to mention the sundown practice session, which is held
once a week exclusively for students of Rhythm World.
On Sunday evenings the hall is packed with students dancing to
non-stop music provided by Shiromi. “Dance for pleasure and love it
forever” is the motto of Rhythm World and ‘Rhythm Life’ is an
appropriate title for their amazing concert. The dance culture is a
fitting example of tireless discipline and commitment on part of all the
students. Tickets can be purchased from Benares, Kalalaya and Barefoot.
