Calling all climate change champs!

Did you know that more than 50% of our youth still do not know what exactly is climate change? It's not just about a tsunami or a landslide, it's about doing destructive nature practices that cause climate change in a terrible manner. The youth of our country still think Sri Lanka hasn't been affected by climate change but it's happening at our doorstep! When you try to explain what the cause for severe thunder storms and intense periods of dry heat, it's actually climate change!

Climate change is a hot topic and it is imperative that we wake up and smell the pollution taking place at our doorstep, the illegal felling of trees and the rampant garbage problem before it's too late. By first loving and saving Mother Nature, we don't realise the gravity of the climate change problem until we ourselves beckon fate. However, despite the wake-up calls from Mother Nature herself, we are still not listening to her pleas and doing something about it.

So the British Council together with past climate change champions are inspiring and motivating the younger generation on doing their bid to tackle climate change.

It's true, as a young person, sometimes you might feel disheartened just because people don't listen to you but the British Council and the media will help you steer the cause forward.

The British Council is now calling for those in the 18 to 23 year age group category to champion the cause of climate change by doing something productive. It can be in terms of mitigation, adaptation or just simple awareness.

Raising awareness, addressing impacts through a special project and contributing to the growing international consensus on the need to tackle climate change is vital.

So don't worry, the British Council is committed to supporting your project with relevant training and guidance and will help you meet decision makers.

It could be a simple idea to begin with, a solar oven, renewable energy use or just asking people to be mindful of mother nature by conserving and reducing the consumption of energy. Maybe you live in a place where you complain about people destroying the environment but don't you think it's time for you to do something about it? It's everyone's responsibility after all. It is your right to protect Mother Nature and be a climate change maker so good luck!
