US assistance for Lanka's judiciary

American Ambassador Patricia Butenis extended US assistance to
improve judicial activities in Sri Lanka, when she met Minister of
Justice Athauda Seneviratna at the Ministry of Justice last week.
Minister Seneviratna during his meeting with the envoy, said that he
would take all steps to solve delays in the judiciary system and other
problems in the field.
The Minister said every effort will be made to restore law and order
in the Northern and Eastern Provinces. Since terrorism has been
eradicated, what is now required is to ensure that peace and order are
maintained in the country.
"A change in the field of law is an urgent necessity and the support
of the international community is vital for this purpose.
To take development in the country forward, the law has to be
strengthened," he said.
The Ambassador responding to the Minister said that USA will extend
the necessary assistance for the improvement of the judicial activities,
especially for the provision of legal assistance to the needy community.
She reiterated that even in the past, the USA had extended its
support to the Government of Sri Lanka and that as an environment of
peace and harmony has now been restored, particular attention will be
paid to the Northern and Eastern Provinces.
