Nature destroyed!

Nature is wonderful

Nature is beautiful

Trees, birds, plants and animals,

They are all wonderful!

Nature gives us water,

Nature gives us food,

Nature gives us everything,

For us to eat and live.

Sadly people destroy it.

They rob the beauty from the people,

They cut off picturesque scenes,

Completely out of the land,

And people never see them again!

It takes five seconds to cut down a tree,

But.....

Years and years to grow it again.

The postman

A postman is a common sight in towns and villages. He generally carries a huge canvas bag containing letters, post cards, money orders and parcels.

His work begins early in the morning. He first goes to the post office to collect the mail and then starts on his rounds to distribute the letters. He travels about on his bicycle from house to house and even to shops and business establishments to deliver letters and parcels.A postman does a hard job of work. It is dull because he does the same thing, every day. He has to go on his bicycle in the hot sun and in the rain to deliver the letters.

He is a useful public servant. People eagerly wait for him. He brings good and bad news. If we had no postman we would have to go to the post office to collect our letters. May God bless our postman.

My mother loves gardening

My mother's name is Kalyai Pushpa Daswatte. She was born on November 29, 1961.

She likes to eat chocolate pudding. Her favourite fruit is rambuttan.

My mother has three brothers living in Makkanigoda. She likes gardening and has planted many beautiful plants in our garden. When she is gardening we also help her sometimes. She reads many books about plants because she believes that she can learn many things about plants by reading.

My mother helps me with my homework and checks my school books.

When I don't know something about maths or any other subject, she teaches me. She is like a teacher at home.

My mother also likes to watch television at night, especially teledramas and news. She also likes to read newspapers and books about plants. I love my mother very much.

If I were a cat...

I wish I were a cat

I could wear a hat

I could go wherever I like

In my furry suit, I could wander

Without any boots

And no one would bother

Where I have gone

If I got an idea

I could go out for a walk

In the middle of the night!

Power of knowledge

If someone asked you what knowledge is, what would your answer be? Knowledge is

something we can gain by engaging in various tasks from birth to death.

Therefore, we gain knowledge from various sources. Many people think that books,

newspapers, the mass media and encyclopedias are the only sources of knowledge.

But it is not so; our parents, society, school and the environment are very good sources of

knowledge. Not only these, but also the experience we have in life too is a good and

valuable source of knowledge.

Let's now see what the main use of having knowledge about something means. If we are

knowledgeable people we can be significant in society. We can also be a successful

people .When there are people with a good knowledge about life, conflicts are reduced

greatly in society. Then it brings about a peaceful society. A knowledgeable person is

able to spend a happy and successful life.

I believe that every person acquires some sort of knowledge from the society he lives in.

He should try his best to improve that knowledge and make his life better. He can then

make society a better place for you and me to live in.

Role of the family in society

The smallest unit in a society is the family. There are two types of families. They are the

extended families and nuclear families.

In the past, all families were extended families. An extended family comprises father,

mother, children, grandparents and even some relations. Extended families were very

common in the past and still many live in such family units. However, like at present, in

the future too people are going to be more competitive than in the past to make their lives

comfortable.

As a result, a money oriented society is being created. As the bread-winner of the family,

the father is called upon to take the responsibility of looking after his family. With so

many economic issues today it is understood that maintaining extended families is rather

difficult. So, people prefer to have nuclear families which includes only father, mother

and two or three children.

Apart from money, lack of time to fulfil their responsibilities towards grandparents and

other members outside the nuclear family has become another social issue. These

problems have damaged family bonds and created disharmony among family members. In

today's society parents don't have time to help even their children in their studies or see

to their personal needs leave alone take care of extended families. This has become a

social problem.

A good family contributes a lot to establish a good society. If we carry out our

responsibilities and duties towards family members properly we will have good families.

Love, affection, caring and sharing also will be a big support to establish a good society

though the smallest unit; the family.

Birth and death of a star

Just like human beings, a star too has to face its stages of birth, middle age and death.

However, the lifespan of a star is millions and billions of years.

A star begins its life by the condensation of a molecular cloud due to a gravitational

collapse. A molecular cloud is, a large cloud containing dust and gases such as hydrogen

and helium. Such a cloud is many light years in length and breadth. Due to the

gravitational force, this cloud of dust and gases shrinks gradually and is subject to

rotation at high speed, generating a great deal of heat and pressure. When the temperature

reaches about 150,000k, the centre of the dark cloud appears to shine. Such a place is

called a protostar.

As the protostar shrinks further, its temperature and pressure rises up more and more, and

the speed of rotation too increases. The two areas known as the core and the disk can be

identified. Astronomers are of the opinion that real stars are formed from the inner core,

while planets are formed from the outer disk. The planets revolve round the respective star.
